Departmental Overview

Plant Breeding and Genetics is recognized as a cornerstone discipline within agricultural sciences. It applies principles from a diverse range of scientific fields to enhance the genetic potential of plants. This process involves the strategic combination of parental plants to produce subsequent generations with superior characteristics. Breeders improve plants by selecting those with the highest genetic potential, guided by performance data, pedigree information, and increasingly sophisticated genetic insights.

The Department of Plant Breeding and Genetics at Ghazi University offers comprehensive knowledge across the core domains of Plant Breeding and Genetics, Seed Sciences and Technology, and Biotechnology. Its curriculum integrates both theoretical and practical foundations, about the fundamentals of basic and applied plant sciences.

The Department is led by Dr. Wajad Nazeer, who brings extensive research experience and a strong record of academic leadership to the role. There is a team of eight highly qualified Ph.D. faculty members, each with substantial international experience in research and teaching. The Department maintains well-equipped laboratories and an adequate allocation of acres dedicated as an experimental farm to facilitate student and faculty research activities. A total of 900 acres of land at the new campus is available to students and faculty for novel research pursuits. This land features both conventional and planned, highly pressurized irrigation systems designed to support irrigated and arid research. Within the experimental area of Plant Breeding and Genetics, various research trials have been established for field evaluation and student research. These include crossing blocks designated for major crops, germplasm collections of cotton (exotic, wild, and indigenous), and wheat breeding material sourced from CIMMYT.

Vision

To nurture academic and research activities for undergraduate and postgraduate levels with following broad vision:

  1. To plan and conduct basic and applied research in cotton, wheat, rice, maize, vegetables, oil seeds and pulse crops.
  2. To develop linkages with private, provincial, national and global research institutions to undertake collaborative research projects.

Mission

The mission of the department is to serve as a vital link in the chain between farmers and consumers, with the aim for ensuring food security by developing new crop varieties that are higher yielding, disease resistant, drought tolerant or regionally adapted to different environments and growing conditions. The discipline, Plant Breeding and Genetics, occupies the biggest share in jobs advertisement by providing the trained agri-graduates for the public and private sectors like research institutions, biotechnological laboratories, and seed science & technology.
