Departmental Overview

Pakistan is among the countries with limited forest resources, with forests covering only about 4.8% of the country's land area, while Punjab has an even lower forest cover of approximately 2.3%. Rapid population growth, deforestation, illegal logging, forest fires, insect pests and diseases, land degradation, and climate change have placed immense pressure on the country's natural ecosystems. These challenges have contributed to biodiversity loss, soil erosion, desertification, declining watershed health, and increased vulnerability to extreme weather events, including devastating floods. Addressing these environmental challenges requires scientifically trained professionals capable of developing and implementing sustainable natural resource management strategies.

The Department is committed to producing competent graduates equipped with the knowledge, technical skills, and professional ethics needed to conserve and sustainably manage forests, rangelands, wildlife, and other natural resources. Through quality education, innovative research, and community engagement, the Department promotes sustainable forestry practices, biodiversity conservation, watershed management, climate change adaptation and mitigation, agroforestry, and ecosystem restoration.

Forests and rangelands play a fundamental role in maintaining ecological balance by conserving soil, regulating water resources, reducing sedimentation in reservoirs, supporting biodiversity, sequestering carbon, and providing timber, fuelwood, fodder, medicinal plants, and other ecosystem services. Recognizing their critical importance, the Department emphasizes integrated natural resource management to improve environmental sustainability while supporting rural livelihoods and national economic development.

Located in the heart of Southern Punjab, Ghazi University provides a unique opportunity to address the region's forestry, rangeland, and environmental challenges through education and research. The Department focuses on the sustainable management of natural forests, irrigated plantations, agroforestry systems, watersheds, wildlife habitats, and biodiversity conservation. Faculty members actively conduct research on contemporary environmental issues and collaborate with national and regional organizations to develop practical solutions for sustainable resource management.

It provides technical guidance and training to farmers, government departments, development organizations, and forestry professionals in nursery management, tree improvement, agroforestry systems, tree–crop interactions, sustainable harvesting, value addition of forest products, and natural resource conservation. Through these efforts, the Department contributes to environmental protection, climate resilience, and the sustainable development of Pakistan's forestry sector.

The Department of Forestry, Range and Wildlife strives to become a center of excellence in education, research, and innovation by preparing future leaders who will safeguard Pakistan's forest, range, and wildlife resources for the benefit of present and future generations.
